Prophylaxis is a term used for cleaning teeth. This prevents disease and tooth decay. Every day there is a buildup of plaque that forms on the teeth. It is caused by the bacteria in our mouth. It sticks to the teeth usually at the gumline and in between the teeth. Your teeth may have a “fuzzy” feel to them. Plaque is acidic and can wear down tooth enamel. Once a hole breaks through enamel it is considered a cavity that will need a filling. Your teeth are not the only important part of your mouth. Your gums are essential to oral hygiene as well. Plaque is also an irritant to the gum tissue. If plaque is not properly cleared away from the gum tissue, you are at risk of developing gum disease. The plaque will harden over time and mix with the minerals in your saliva to form tartar. The amount and the rate at which you build up tartar depends on the mineral consistency in your saliva and your body chemistry. While brushing and flossing helps minimize tartar build up, it’s hard to completely prevent it. Once tartar has formed it needs to be professionally removed by a hygienist. 

Most of our patients benefit from having their teeth cleaned every six months; however, some patients need it more or less.
